About

Dr. Emma Alexander

Dr. Emma Alexander is an Associate Professor and Chair of the History Department at the University of Winnipeg, a position she has held since July 2023. Her academic training spans three continents: she completed a law degree at the School of Oriental & African Studies (University of London), an MA in Asian Studies and History at the University of Victoria, and a PhD in South Asian History at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Alexander’s historical methodology bridges archival colonial administrative records with the lived experience of marginalized labourers, foregrounding categories of age, gender, and mobility. As Chair, she also plays an active role in university governance, sitting on the University Senate and overseeing graduate and undergraduate advising.
